We've been watching the same four problems play out at Self Storage Shelf for years now. People ring up, rent a unit, pack it, and then realise six months in that they've done it all wrong. The frustrating bit is that most of these slip-ups are completely avoidable once you know what to watch for.
Here's what Shelf residents get tangled up in most often, and how to sidestep them.
This one tops the list. Someone measures their spare bedroom, thinks "right, that's about the size I need," and books a unit half that size. Then the actual moving day arrives and nothing fits.
The problem is that you're not storing a room—you're storing loose items that need stacking, organisation, and breathing room. Boxes don't pack perfectly. Furniture takes up more space than you think. And if you cram everything in, you'll spend the next year playing Tetris every time you need to pull something out.
Before you book, make a proper list of what's actually going in. Write it down. Be specific—not "some boxes," but "twelve banker's boxes, a double bed frame, four dining chairs, a desk." Take photos of the items if you're unsure. Then add 30 per cent on top because we all underestimate. If you're still not sure, call and talk it through—that's what we're here for. As we've covered elsewhere, sizing wrong at the start costs you more in the long run.
The second mistake sounds trivial until you're standing in a storage unit six months later trying to find your winter duvet in a sea of unmarked cardboard.
Label every single box. Not on the side that's going to face the wall—on the front where you'll actually see it. Write what's in there, and which room it came from. Better still, add a rough date. If you're storing seasonal stuff, colour-code it. Red for winter, blue for summer, whatever works for you.
This also matters if something goes wrong and you need to check your contents quickly. You won't have to open ten boxes to track down your insurance documents or proof of what you're storing.
Just because you have vertical space doesn't mean you should stack your boxes to the ceiling without thinking. We see this constantly—someone piles their unit haphazardly, then can't access anything in the middle without bringing everything down.
Stack with intention. Put things you might need sooner toward the front and bottom. Heavier items below, lighter on top. Keep boxes of similar height together so stacks are stable. Leave a small walkway down the middle of your unit if you can, even if it eats a bit of space—it'll save you hours of hassle when you need something.
And don't lean things against the walls at odd angles. Use shelving or stack flat. It protects your belongings and makes the whole unit last longer. Read more here about how planning your layout actually saves time and money.
Some items genuinely don't belong in a self-storage unit. Anything damp, anything that needs climate control, anything flammable. Shelf gets proper rain—if you've lived here any length of time, you know the valley can get wet—and damp storage is a recipe for ruined belongings.
Check your unit for any signs of moisture before you move anything in. Don't store documents or photographs unless you're confident they'll stay dry. Electronics need care too. Things like old paint tins, petrol, or cleaning products that could leak will damage your other stuff and violate your rental agreement.
If you're unsure whether something is safe to store, ask before you bring it in. It takes two minutes and saves weeks of regret. This guide explains more about what does and doesn't work in self-storage.
These mistakes cluster together because they all come from the same root: rushing the packing and planning stage. Take your time at the start—measure properly, label thoroughly, organise sensibly, and check what you're actually storing. It makes the entire experience smoother.
