Before you contact anyone, actually measure what you're storing. Get a tape measure out. Go through boxes, furniture, whatever it is. Jot down rough dimensions. If you've got a sofa, a desk, a few filing cabinets, and a dozen boxes, that takes maybe 20 minutes to measure properly. Then add about 20% for the fact that you'll need space to move around and access things at the back without playing storage Tetris.

It sounds tedious, but it saves you from paying for a unit that's too small, or worse, too large and therefore more expensive than necessary.

Forgetting That Shelf Weather Isn't Kind to Everything

Not Planning for How Long You'll Actually Need It

"Just for three months" turns into six months turns into a year. Then you're paying for something you've forgotten about. Some people rent a unit without being realistic about whether this is genuinely temporary or whether it's becoming permanent.

Think hard about your actual timeline. Are you storing things while renovating? While waiting to move? While downsizing? Figure out the most honest estimate, then add a couple of months because these things rarely go to plan. If you need it longer, you can extend. If you don't, you're not locked in. But going in with rose-tinted assumptions about timing means you'll either overpay or get caught out when your deadline passes and you're not ready to collect.
